Apple Pie

Apple pie has been around for quite some time. It has even been said to be the most American pie of all, but is that true or not.

Apples aren’t even from America they’re from Asia. Americans didn’t make apple pies either it came from England. Then the Colonists brought it over to America. The only apples that were from America were crab apples and if you ever had one you know that they don’t taste good in pies. They wouldn’t eat the crust just the insides. The apple pie recipe was stolen from Britain by the Americans.

On the other hand some people think apple pie is still the most American dessert. It has been around for a long time. The sudden burst of flavor when you bite into the crust. The warmth that soon takes over your body. The way you can feel the taste of it running down your throat and then by the time the pie is gone you wish that you could savor it again. The memories that come rushing back to you every time you take a bite. Apple pie can be the most American dessert it just depends upon what you grew up with.

Apple pie has been around since 1381 and it is from England. It has been around for 634 years. Then it became an American tradition in the early 1900’s. In 1950-1960 women baking pies was a sign of a happy family. For a lot of people Apple pie brings back memories of spending time with family, telling stories, and our independence.

Apples are a member of the rose family. It takes about 36 apples to create one gallon of apple cider. Two pounds of apples make one 9-inch pie. Americans eat more than 19 pounds of apples every year. Most apples are still picked by hand in the fall. Archaeologist have found evidence that humans have been enjoying apples since 6500 BC. Apples are grown in all 50 states. The average apple contains 10 seeds. Malusdomesticaphobia is the fear of apples.

According to a 2008 survey by Crisco® and American Pie Council, Nearly one out of five (19%) of Americans prefer apple pie. Thirty-five percent of Americans say they’ve had pies for breakfast, pies as lunch (66%) and midnight snacks (59%). 36 million Americans identify apple pie as their favorite. The state of Vermont adopted apple pie as the official state pie in 1999. The first pies were filled with meat and called “coffins” which means “basket” or “box.” Pie is finally beginning to challenge cupcakes for the trendiest dessert.

National Apple Pie Day is May 13. Early English apple pies had no sugar. Sugar cost too much. Sweet fruits, like figs, were added instead. Pies first appeared in Britain in the 12th century, usually spelled ‘pye’ and containing meat. A bit of high school chemistry goes a long way when baking pies.

I think smores tops everything. For me, that crunch with the gooey chocolate and then the warm flavor from the marshmallow. Then when you’re with your friends and family laughing and talking around the fire. It always makes me smile.

Smores were first looked at in 1927. No one knows who invented them but the Girl Scouts were given credit for it. Now every time I go camping I make sure to bring my smore supplies.

This is how to make an apple pie:

9 inch double crust pie

1/2 cup unsalted butter

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1/4 cup water

1/2 cup white sugar

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

8 Granny Smith apples – peeled, cored and sliced

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).

Melt the butter in a saucepan.

Stir in flour to form a paste.

Add water, white sugar and brown sugar, and bring to a boil.

Reduce temperature and let simmer.

Place the bottom crust in your pan.

Fill with apples, mounded slightly.

Cover with a lattice work crust.

Gently pour the sugar and butter liquid over the crust.

Pour slowly so that it does not run off.

Bake 15 minutes in the preheated oven.

Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

Continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, until apples are soft.

In the end I still believe that apple pie is not the most American desert.

I don’t know if there ever will be, but who knows.
